Colour.

When I first started taking photos I could only shoot in black & white. I didn’t really understand colour at the time, in terms of what I wanted to express.

I love strong things, flavours, baselines, personalities. A massive part of my life has been like that, big dramatic events, huge upheavals, highs and lows. Never really understood peace, routine, being ‘settled’. I thought those things were terribly boring to be honest. But I was wrong.

Donegal has quite a muted landscape in my eyes. The light is soft & flat (mostly), the landscape is fairly muted at first glance. The part I live in is quite soft & sleepy - at least if it’s compared to London.

When I started to break into the fashion industry, I realised I would have to understand colour. (95% of fashion images must be in colour, so finding a way of incorporating it into my work was difficult for me, especially if I’m shooting bridal or tweed.

I realised that colour is a feeling, a smell, maybe nostalgia. Once I figured that out, that I could put that into my images I was happy.

So began a journey of exploring all things soft. A study of subtlety that was long overdue to be honest.

I’m lucky to be friends with one of Ireland’s best models, Sarah Kennedy. Not only is she incredibly hardworking & professional, she is creative. Any photographer reading this will agree how wonderful it is to work with someone who intuitively knows what you’re trying to express. Sarah is that & more.

Again for Belleek Living.

I am starting to see my love of strong things creeping out again, colours that jar slightly, but still make me have a feeling, but still in a way that isn’t too edgy, that it is uncomfortable to look at.

So this blog isn’t going to make any astounding claims or be personally revealing in any way. It’s literally just random mumblings about my relationship with colour.

I have sooooooooo much work I can’t publish just yet, it’s exciting but also annoying, because it’s so much better than any other work I’ve done. But, patience is worth learning too I suppose. :D
